We have the tools you need to best prepare the material and get into all the nooks and crannies – plus, you don't have to worry about damaging the surface or being exposed to harmful fumes while renovating your windows.

Window renovation – this is how you do it!

Preparation of old windows

Picking, marking and framing work Use protective gloves and goggles when handling glass. Check the fittings, which ones work, which ones need to be repaired or replaced? Are there any irregularities in the arch? Mark and fix immediately or after dismantling. Mark hinges, sashes and windows before dismantling. Glass and frames are unique and should be matched together as they were originally. Write down where they have been or will be and mark which parts belong to each window and what is inside – or outside. Install the windows and place them on a flat surface. It is recommended to place a protective sheet underneath to collect dirt and any glass chips.

Heat up and scrape off old paint

Use Speedheater's paint scrapers and heating systems to soften and scrape away putty and paint in poor condition. To make the paint and putty soft in the easiest way, infrared light is used before scraping. This way, the paint is heated from the inside, and never reaches such high temperatures that the wood is damaged. We recommend Speedheater Cobra or Speedheater Rapid Slim for the easiest, non-toxic and gentlest paint removal possible. Speedheater Cobra is well suited for smaller areas, while Speedheater Rapid Slim covers larger areas at once. Be careful of the glass – if you need to get close to the surface, the heat should not be directed directly at unprotected glass. Our recommendation is to use aluminum foil wrapped around a piece of cardboard or equivalent as protection. When removing putty, the machine can be angled towards and close to the putty, this way the heat is directed towards the putty and there is less risk of the glass breaking. Remove the now soft paint with a paint scraper that fits the profiles on your frames. For most windows we recommend a Boomerang scraper with different profiles on the different sides. You will get the best results if you pull the paint scraper towards you with light pressure against the wood. To remove the old putty, loosen it from the window frame with a putty chisel with support wheels. This allows you to remove the window putty in a controlled manner without damaging either the wood or the glass pane. Then loosen the putty from the glass using a putty scraper that is pushed along the glass.

Paint and reseal the windows

Sand all remaining surfaces to a matte finish to ensure good adhesion of the new window paint. Check the quality of the wood in the arches and repair any rot. If the wood in the rebate is very dry or gray, it is a good idea to prime it with oil. Make sure it has dried thoroughly before caulk. Check that the humidity is lower than 15% before you start painting the window. Shellacs are applied to the putty seam to prevent the wood from stealing the oil in the putty. The frames are then primed before the window panes and fittings are replaced. The bottom of the rebate is covered with putty and the glass pane is gently pressed down, squeezing the putty out on the back. Carefully nail in glazing pins and protect the glass with tape. Putty is spread along one entire side of the rebate, then a putty knife is used to draw diagonally towards the edge to press and smooth the putty against the pane. Repeat the treatment around the entire pane. Then let the putty dry completely before painting. Check frames, linings and window sills, scrape and paint where necessary.

IR lamp reduces the risk of damage to the substrate

Window renovation requires patience and precision, but with our tools the work becomes efficient and minimizes the risk of damaging glass and wooden substrates. Working only with scrapers is unnecessarily tiring and also risks destroying the substrate with scratches. In many cases, the beautiful hand-blown glass is in old windows that are fragile and need careful handling. Our infrared technology is specially developed with temperatures that reduce the risk of damage to both glass and substrate.
